New Restrictions for International Students
New Restrictions for International Students in Canada: What You Need to Know
Canada has recently introduced a series of changes that affect international students who want to study there. If you are planning to pursue your education in Canada, here are the key updates to keep in mind:
Cap on Study Permits
Canada has set a limit on the number of new study permits issued each year. This means fewer international students will be approved compared to before.
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
Applicants now need a PAL from the province where they plan to study. This confirms you are included in that province’s student quota under the national cap.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The rules for PGWPs have become stricter. Not all programs qualify anymore, especially some college diplomas, so students need to check carefully before applying.
Spousal Work Permits
The rules have also changed for spouses of international students. Only certain programs make their partners eligible for an open work permit.
Transfers Between Schools
Switching between Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) is no longer simple. In most cases, students must reapply for a new study permit to transfer.
Proof of Funds Requirement
The minimum amount of financial support students must show has increased. Applicants will need to prove they have more funds available to cover living expenses and tuition.
Graduate Students
Master’s and PhD students, who were often exempt from caps before, are now also included in the restrictions.
